Anthony Rovente teaches social studies at LISD ,on a remote island in Washington State only accessible by ferry. He helps his students connect with the greater world and build 21st century skills through the use of technology and unique partnerships. ProjectWA and the Monuments Project are both examples of this approach to education. He is looking forward to what this transatlantic collaboration will teach us about the WWI soldiers who fought and died for our collective freedom.
Tom Neville is an educator at THATClass. He started the Monuments Project as a Social Studies teacher at ASP. He strives to help students navigate old documents and utilize new tools to develop and broadcast their own interpretations of the past. By engaging students in such work, Neville hopes they will both contribute to public understanding of given topics and build real skills in the process. He's enjoyed having his understanding of WWI expanded by stories that the Monuments Project students have uncovered.
Tim Fry created the 468 Field Trip mobile app platform on which the Monuments Project app is based. He likes to develop technology that helps people engage more in the real world, with real people; and he partners with students and teachers like Mr. Rovente in Washington State to make learning fun and rewarding. Tim loves stories, and he can’t wait to see what WWI stories are uncovered by the Monuments Project.
Claude Lord is an Instructional Technology Coach at ASP supporting effective digital age learning environments and maximizing K-12 teaching and learning. Claude is looking forward to seeing the Monuments Project unfold the potential global connections and crowdsourced stories, that seamless technology can now enhance, through authentic engaged learning.
David Hanna teaches history at Stuyvesant High School in New York. He is the author of Knights of the Sea (2012) and Rendezvous with Death (2016), and is a past recipient of the New York Times Teachers Make a Difference Award. The opportunity to have his students conduct original research for the Monuments Project was a way to share the experience of being a historian, in real time. He's excited to see the reactions to dead ends, the small victories that result from doggedness, and those rare cases where true synthesis is realized. New York played an important role in World War I. Stuyvesant students can help bring part of this story to a larger audience.
