Then when he was 22 years old, he registered for the military in 1917, in Camas, Washington. He was assigned to the 161st infantry lead by Colonel Jay B. Lovless. ​

According to his registration document Bennett lived in Camas, Washington, before he joined the military. He was previously employed by Crown Willamette Paper Mills Co. There were strikes at multiple paper mills owned by Crown Willamette Paper in 1916, as shown in the labor statistics document below.

He was shipped to France on December 13th 1917 on the ship, President Lincoln.

Then on the opening day of the battle of Chateau Thierry, Raymond Bennett obtained a leg injury, in June of 1918.

He later died of wounds on October 8, 1918. Raymond Bennett was later buried in Suresnes, where his mother went on the Gold Star Mother Pilgrimage in 1931, to visit his grave.
